Cabot (CBT) is not a semiconductor company
Claim
The lineage, because the name still misleads screeners 26 years later:
Cabot Corp → spun CMP business 2000 → Cabot Microelectronics → renamed CMC Materials → acquired by Entegris 2022.
So the semiconductor exposure that makes CBT look like a materials name is inside ENTG, and has been since 2022. Cabot Corp today is ~63% carbon black — a tire input.
Why it mattered
In the July 2026 semi-materials sweep, CBT was the group's best performer (+0.9% while peers fell 30–42%) — precisely because it has no AI narrative to compress. That's not resilience in semiconductor materials; it's the absence of semiconductor materials.
Removing it moves the group drawdown from ~−27% to ~−33%, converging with equipment and eliminating most of the apparent defensiveness. Its inclusion was doing real work in supporting a conclusion that turned out to be wrong. See [[semi-materials]].
Guard
A company whose exposure to a theme comes from its name rather than its current segment disclosure needs its revenue split checked before it enters a basket. Legacy names outlive the businesses that earned them.
What would falsify this
A material Cabot re-entry into semiconductor materials. Check segment revenue, not headlines.
History
- 2026-07-30 — found during primary-filing review of the semi-materials sweep; CBT excluded and the group conclusion revised.
