On a local-currency-reporting ADR the broken enterprise value is invertible — it encodes true net cash in the reporting currency
Claim
This is a different mechanism from [[pitfall-vendor-ev-inverts-net-cash]], which is about a stale market cap on a big move day. Here both terms are current; they are simply denominated in different currencies.
.mcp/fin.py PDD, 2026-08-19, reported:
| field | value |
|---|---|
| MktCap | $128.39B (USD, correct) |
| EV | −$304.31B |
| EV/EBITDA | −3.13 |
| EV/Rev | −0.69 |
| P/S | 0.29 |
PDD reports in RMB. The feed took the USD market cap and subtracted the RMB cash and short-term investments without converting.
The inversion
Because the error is a clean subtraction, the reported EV still contains the information:
local-currency net cash = USD market cap − reported EV
= 128.39 − (−304.31)
= RMB 432.70B
The balance sheet confirmed it independently: cash RMB 123.04B + short-term investments RMB 313.03B = RMB 436.07B at 2026-03-31 (PDD's own headline figure), against RMB 5.12B of debt. The inversion landed within ~1% of the audited number.
Converted at spot 6.743: US$63.9B of net cash, ~50% of the market capitalisation, and a true EV of +$64.5B rather than −$304.31B.
| metric | vendor | rebuilt | error |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise value | −$304.31B | +$64.5B | sign inverted |
| EV/EBITDA | −3.13 | 4.4x | sign inverted |
| EV/Revenue | −0.69 | 0.98x | sign inverted |
| P/S | 0.29 | 1.96x | USD cap ÷ RMB revenue |
P/S 0.29 reproduces exactly as 128,390 ÷ 442,403 — a USD numerator over an RMB denominator.
Any ratio pairing a price field with a statement field is corrupted the same way, so P/S is
broken wherever EV is.
How to apply
- A negative EV on a profitable company is never real. Treat it as a currency or share-count tell, not a valuation signal.
- Invert it to recover local-currency net cash, then confirm against the balance sheet. The inversion is a fast cross-check, not a substitute for the filing.
- Rebuild every price-over-statement ratio by hand — EV/EBITDA, EV/Rev, P/S. Ratios built from two statement fields (gross margin, operating margin, ROE) are unaffected, because both terms share a currency.
- Per-share fields may still be fine. On PDD,
EPS(ttm) 9.56andBVPS 44.72were both ADS-basis and FX-converted correctly, soP/E,P/Band Graham IV were all usable — [[pitfall-adr-book-value-corrupts-price-to-book]] did not fire. Check, don't assume in either direction; that is the same lesson as [[pitfall-adr-conversion-restates-history-cleanly]].
What would falsify this
A vendor fixing the conversion, or a case where the reported EV does not reconcile to
market cap − local net cash — which would mean the error is compound (currency and stale
cap, or currency and wrong share count) and the inversion no longer recovers a clean number.

History
- 2026-08-19 — observed on PDD during the first full analysis of the name. The same negative-EV signature had been noted in passing on TOELY (−$238.56B) and UMC (−$32.05B) inside [[pitfall-adr-book-value-corrupts-price-to-book]]; this note isolates the mechanism and adds the inversion.
