A tranche ladder flattened into one frontmatter field becomes a zone that is always "in"

static 2026-09-28

Claim

Manhattan Associates' 2026-08-27 report carried a sound three-tranche entry ladder: 40% @ $195-210 · 35% @ $175-195 · 25% @ $150-170. Its frontmatter carried entry: 150-210 — the union of all three rungs.

Every consumer that reads frontmatter rather than prose then saw a 40%-wide band, which reports "in zone" at essentially any price the stock could plausibly trade. MANH rendered as in-zone and green at $206, $210 and $223, against a verdict that explicitly said do not initiate and prose that said still don't chase.

Why this is the inverse of the known failure

[[pitfall-stale-entry-zone-suppresses-a-name]] records a zone left above the price, so the scan reports "still below its add zone" and the name is silently skipped. This is the mirror: a zone so wide that the scan reports "in zone" permanently, and the name is silently promoted. Both failures come from the same root — the frontmatter band is the only thing downstream tooling reads, so whatever it says overrides the report's actual judgment.

The promoting failure is the more dangerous of the two. A suppressed name costs an opportunity that nobody notices. A falsely promoted name actively instructs a purchase, and it does so with a green marker that looks like the analysis agreeing.

The rule

The entry: field carries the top tranche only. That is the price at which the ladder says to start buying, which is exactly the question "is this in zone?" is asking. The full ladder stays in the body, where a human reads it before sizing.

MANH's corrected frontmatter carries entry: 180-195 — width cut from 40% to 8.3% — and at $199.63 the name correctly reads out of zone.

Detection

A zone whose width exceeds ~15% of its midpoint is a candidate. Check whether the body describes tranches; if it does, the frontmatter has almost certainly been flattened.

History

  • 2026-09-28 — written after the MANH re-analysis found the name had been reading as in-zone at three prices above its own do-not-initiate verdict. Discovered while answering a different question (does the zone survive re-derivation), which is how the width problem surfaced at all — the zone did not merely need refreshing, it had never been a zone.
